On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, Alan Jones passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home, surrounded by his wife and sons. He faced his year-long journey with brain cancer in his typical fashion, with dignity, strength and without complaint.

Alan grew up in Ankeny, graduated from Ankeny High School, attended DMACC and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. He worked for the City of Ankeny Street Department, served as an Ankeny Policeman, was in the Air Force National Guard for 6 years and worked at John Deere Des Moines Works for 33 years. Working and serving were the themes of Alan’s life. He was entirely devoted to his family, extended families, his work, his co-workers and his friends.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Lois Jones; his brother, Bill Jones; his mother-in-law, Enes Logli; his nephew, Kelly Jones; and many beloved in-laws.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Denise Jones; sons, Andrew and David Jones; half brother, Richard Jones; beloved brother-in-law, Peter Logli (Rebecca); sister-in-law, Wadene Jones; nephews, Bryan and Zachary Jones; niece, Tanya Graham; as well as many dear cousins and in-laws.

Alan was born October 3, 1951 in Chariton, Iowa. He lived his entire life in Ankeny but his heart was always anchored to the family farm near Chariton. As a child his family drove down every weekend to help and visit his grandparents. After they passed away, Alan enjoyed helping his father and Uncle Richard Jones with farm chores and projects. After their passing, Alan continued to work the family farm in retirement. He even managed to make several trips to mow after his surgery, radiation and chemo. He last mowed in October and even re-visited the farm January 15th on a warm sunny day. The open sky, train whistles, bird sounds, his fishing pond, the tranquility and his bond to that land were a great joy to him. Fixing, repairing, restoring or maintaining anything for anybody gave Alan great satisfaction. He would keenly notice when help was needed and before even being asked he would arrive with the parts, tools and supplies.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Memorial Services of Iowa, 4208 N Ankeny Boulevard. His family welcomes your presence and your memories of Alan. Burial and a graveside service will be held in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation or the DSM Animal Rescue League.

His family wants to thank Michelle, her family and the staff at Daylight Donuts, EJ, his coffee buddies, his former co workers, his classmates, his loyal friends, new friends and devoted family members for their continuous prayers, helpful support and their steadfast love.

John 11:25 “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me, will never die.”
