Barbara J Costello

December 29, 1947 - August 14, 2022

Barbara Jeanne (Schonhoff) Costello, formerly of Long Grove Iowa, and later a resident of Ankeny passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from the effects of Glioblastoma.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). A Rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m., prior to the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 22, 2022, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1^st St.) with urn burial following at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

She was born December 29, 1947 to Carl and Elizabeth Schonhoff in Davenport Iowa. Barbara attended Assumption High School in Davenport and went on to work at Alcoa and in later years was a teacher’s aide in classrooms for children with disabilities. Barbara met her husband Dennis Costello through a mutual friend, and they were married November 29, 1969, and were the love of each other’s life. Barbara and Dennis raised their children in Long Grove and moved to Ankeny in 1995.

Barbara was a kind, gentle, loving and gracious lady. Barbara also had many loves, with her first love being her husband, children, grandson, and family. Barbara loved her yard and working with her flowers. Barbara had a good eye for interior decorating and appreciated a good British program on IPTV. Barb also knew her way around the kitchen and had many specialties with pie baking at the top of the list. Barbara also did not disappoint her mother with her housekeeping.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father and mother; her sister, Jeanette; her brothers-in-law, Dick Delacluyse, Dan Sigler and Jim Mills; and her grandparents. Barbara is survived by her husband, Dennis; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Liz and grandson Alex; and daughter, Christine; sisters, Kathleen Delacluyse, Debra Selvy, Judy Mills, and Marjorie Bell; brother, Michael Schonhoff; and sisters-in-law, Teresa (Ted) Gehbauer, Joan (Richard) Brus, and Ann (Tim) Miksch.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Iowa PBS, Food Bank of Iowa, or UnityPoint Hospice.
