Carl W. Barnes entered his heavenly home on December 26, 2021 at the age of 90.  He was born in 1931 on a farm near Hopkins, Missouri, the son of Freman and Eldola Barnes.  He lived in Alleman, Iowa where he resided for 44 years.  Carl served in the Air Force from 1951 – 1955, and in the Reserves for several years afterwards.  He married his loving and devoted wife, JoAnn Matthews on August 7, 1960 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

Carl received his bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State in 1959 and master’s degree from Iowa State University in 1974.  He spent more than 30 years teaching in the public school system.  He taught in Iowa, first in Greenfield, then Madrid, and finally, the Des Moines Public School District.  His career first started with teaching high school English and Drama, but later turned to teaching Art at the middle school level.  He was a person who appreciated art and literature and the ability to pass his knowledge on to others.

Carl was a car enthusiast.  He did everything from collecting model cars to building them.  He has quite an extensive collection, which he has amassed over the years.  He loved looking at his car collection and was quite proud of them.  He was into older cars, but also liked some of the newer models as well.  This was something he talked about frequently, especially to his grandkids.  Carl also loved traveling.

Carl was active in the church and the community as a whole.  He was part of the town council of Sheldahl and Polk County Planning Commission, as well as church council and choir of the Sheldahl United Methodist Church and a Mason.  He was currently a member of the Ankeny First United Methodist Church.

Carl is survived by his wife, JoAnn Barnes; two daughters, Karla Albaugh of Elkhart, Iowa, and Kris (Tony) Jacobson of Naperville, Illinois; four grandsons, Tyler (Alyson) Albaugh, Logan (Taylor) Albaugh, Matthew Jacobson, and Bryce Jacobson; two great-grandchildren, Theodore Albaugh and Elsie Albaugh; two sisters, Ina (Basil) Lister of Bedford, Iowa, and Kay Townsend of Springfield Missouri.  Carl is pre-deceased by son-in-law, Robert Albaugh, husband of Karla; sister, Cheryl Sweeney; and brother-in-law, Bill Townsend, husband of Kay.

Memorial donations can be sent to Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut Street, Ankeny, Iowa 50023.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) with burial of his urn taking place immediately after the service at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
