Constance “Connie” Susan Hellmann, 65, passed away peacefully in her home on July 28, 2022.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, August 1, 2022 at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st St.) in Ankeny, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, also at the church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, IA.

Connie was born in Des Moines, IA, to John “Jack” and Mildred (McDonald) McClavy. She married Tom Hellmann on November 6, 1976 at St. John’s Basilica in Des Moines, IA, and worked in the Department of Administrative Services for the State of Iowa for 38 years before retiring in 2013.

Connie enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, Mahjongg, and her book club. She loved vacationing in Clear Lake, Okoboji, Ozarks, Florida, and many other locations with family. She even took once in a lifetime trips to both Sturgis and Ireland.

Family was very important to Connie, and she especially enjoyed watching her children’s and her grandchildren’s activities, often traveling to three counties in one day just to see them all. She didn’t know a stranger and was always welcoming to everyone she met. To many she was known as “Big Conk”, and Big Conk was everyone’s biggest fan.

Connie is survived by her husband, Tom Hellmann; children, Amanda (Thomas) White, Stephanie (Shawn) McCollom, and Tyler (Keisha) Hellmann; grandchildren, Drake White, Cole White, Hattie McCollom, McKynlee White, Henry McCollom, and George McCollom; six sisters, Mary (Lynn) Barney, Peggy Erickson, Kate (Roger) Pearson, Julia (Mike) McQuiston; Jane (Jack) Kinney, and Cindy (Paul) Cahill; two sisters-in-law, Terri McClavy and Lee Ann Quinn; mother-in-law, Jackie Hellmann, and many other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John “Jack” and Mildred McClavy; father-in-law, Rayburn Hellmann; brother, John McClavy; brothers-in-law, Don Quinn and John Erickson; and great-niece, Lily Soper.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
