Darwin Wayne Zimmer, 90, of Norwalk (previously of Elkhart), passed away April 15, 2021 at Edencrest at The Legacy in Norwalk, IA. He was a great man and loved by his family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) in Ankeny, Iowa. Graveside service will be held immediately after the visitation at 12:30 p.m. at Byers/Cory Grove Cemetery in Elkhart, Iowa.

Wayne was born December 20, 1930 in Jefferson, Iowa, the son of the late Herman and Sylvia Zimmer. He attended Sheldahl High School and graduated on May 24, 1949. Wayne enlisted in the United States Army in the fall of 1951. He proudly served his country as a mechanic in Korea. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1953. He later was selected to attend the 60th anniversary recognition service for his time in Korea by the Department of Defense for his honorable service.

Wayne was united in marriage to Nadine Tomlinson on May 19, 1967. Together they were blessed with six children: Harold, Diane, Linda, Pam, Carl, and Keith.

Wayne began his working life as a farmer and retired from farming in 2016. Wayne loved spending time with his family. He always had a story to tell his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and loved woodworking and spending time in his shop. Wayne will be remembered for his kind heart, integrity, character, and hard work.

Wayne was a member of the VFW, served on various church committees, community and county boards. He was a past President of the Iowa Soybean Association.

Those left to cherish his memory include children, Diane (Michael Wentura) Zimmer of Waseca, MN, Linda (Marty) Bussanmas of Norwalk, IA, Pam (Doug) Oldham of Roland, AR, Carl (Janine) Van Gorp of Elkhart, IA, and Keith (Jamie) Van Gorp of Altoona, IA; grandchildren, Emily, Justin, Jonathan, Mary, Dustin, Jacob, Hannah, Alyssa, Ryan, Jake, Ginger, Krista, and Tiffany; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Lois Anderson of Denver, CO, and Thelma (Frank) Hennessey of Ankeny, IA; sister-in-law, Phyllis Seuferer of Ankeny, IA; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine (Tomlinson) Zimmer; parents, Herman and Sylvia Zimmer; and son, Harold Zimmer.

The family extends sincere thanks to all the staff at Edencrest at The Legacy in Norwalk, IA, and Hospice of the Midwest in Johnston, IA (Tiffany and Cait) for their love and support.
