Born Dec 21, 1945, David Jon Fries of Ankeny, Iowa passed away at the age of 77 on May 19, 2023, at the Taylor House in Des Moines, IA of cancer.

David was a wonderful husband, an amazing father, and a good friend. He will be remembered for his love of family, friends, playing golf, and his love of travelling with his wife. David was the best ride or die partner you could find, and Niva could talk him into going anywhere!

David grew up in Armstrong, IA. He attended college at Minnesota State and then joined the U.S. Navy for four years as a corpsman. He was stationed at Balboa Hospital and later at Camp Pendleton California. It was in California where he met his wife Niva.

After four years in the Navy, David accepted a job back in Iowa as an epidemiologist for the Iowa State Health Department. David worked for the Iowa State Health department for 28 years and retired as the Division Director.

After retirement, David worked for Iowa Priority Prescriptions savings program and later founded Iowa Drug Donation Repository (now known as Safe Net Rx) an affordable medication access to patients in need. It was a project he was very passionate and proud of.

David loved sports, as he played golf almost every day in his true retirement. His love for sports started when he was young as he ran track, played football and basketball in high Sshool. David coached both his daughters in soccer and his love of sports extended into watching his grandchildren play and participate in their own events. He loved watching his grandkids compete and perform.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Niva; his daughters, Louise (James) and Lindsay (Lee); grandchildren, Alexis, Avin, Penelope, and Daphne; sister, Marceil; brothers, LuVern (MaryJane) and Vernon (MaryAnn); and several nieces and nephews.

David’s life will be celebrated on Friday, June 30, 2023, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at Briarwood Golf Club (3405 NE Trilein Drive).

If desired, in lieu of flowers, a monetary donation can be received by the family in memory of David for which the funds will be used to purchase a memorial bench.
