Dave married my sister in 1972 in a church on Camp Pendleton. Then they moved to Iowa. Dave reminds me alot of my dad with his midwestern values, reliable, honest, trustworthy - the kind of person you want flying a plane. Our whole family felt welcomed and loved when we were with him. Just don't immediately assume he is picking up the check - in that way he is like me mom (kidding). He has 2 kids and 4 grandkids that have his DNA and imprint - love of sports, high achievers, happy. So in a way Dave will always be around. RIP Dave

David was a visionary leader whose energy and guidance helped establish Iowa as a national innovator in charitable pharmacy. He was a true public health champion who continually strived to serve the needs of our most vulnerable communities. It was an honor to work with David. His love of family and Hawkeye sports was second to none. He will be missed!

I’m so sorry to hear about Dave’s passing. Know my prayers are for his family. I first started working with him when I was school nurse and we were part of the team that gave the whole school immunity per shots when the law went into effect. We were both members of the Iowa Public Health Association which I know made a difference in the general Iowa Health. He helped me apply to work for the State of Iowa on highway safety issues. That made a big change in my life. I have always considered us friends and Niva always welcomed me into their home so many years ago when the girls were little. He always talked about how much his family meant to him. I know this state and world are better for his being here !

I worked with David for many years as his public health attorney. He had a passion for public health and a commitment to public service that was so admirable. I enjoyed our many discussions and always appreciated his wit, wisdom, smile, and easy laughter. He was so proud of his family and spoke of them often. We in his public health family are grateful for his years of service and the many ways in which he made Iowa a healthier, kinder, and better place.

I worked with Dave Fries at the Iowa Department of Public Health in Des Moines, Iowa. On my first day of work, he appointed me the Secretary-Treasurer of the Public Health Association of Iowa. We worked together in the Public Health Association besides our work in Disease Prevention. I was also an Epidemiologist like David. We went to staff meeting together. I was hard of hearing and he had people speak up so I could hear them, etc. I met his wife at IPHA meetings. I worked for the department for 20 years. He was from Armstrong and I was from Archer, Iowa and he would assign me grant visitations in my home area. He appointed me to work with the Governor on the Volunteer Recognition events every year around Iowa. He was a great man and will be remembered by many for his great work in Iowa.
