Dean Plantz, 82, of Sun Lakes, Arizona passed away after losing a courageous battle with cancer. Dean was born in Blue Earth, MN on September 23, 1940, to Arnold and Helen Plantz. He grew up in the Blue Earth area alongside his younger brothers, Gary and David Sabin, and sister, Diane Lee (Phil).

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) with a time of sharing at 2:30 p.m. and a graveside service following at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

After graduating from Elmore High School, Dean attended Waldorf College and Mankato Technical School. Being a proud patriotic American he served four years in the US Air Force and upon returning he married Janice Berg on December 27, 1966, starting their life together in Fairmont, MN. After working for L & M Motors and Allied Insurance, he went to work for Nationwide Insurance and retired after 32 years. Dean then worked nine years for Quest Diagnostics. He was a member of Mt. View Lutheran Church.

Some of his fondest memories were playing golf, softball, bowling, riding on RAGBRAI eight times, participating in a rubber raft race, Drake Relays, triathlon, and enjoying his many friends. But “Papa’s” biggest enjoyment was spending time with his granddaughter, Ava. Dean will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Jan; son, Tad; granddaughter, Ava; sister, Diane; sister-in-law, Margi Swanson (Jim); and many relatives and friends.

While we are saddened by our loss, we know Dean is raising a glass in Heaven with his family and friends who have gone before us.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Cancer research or your favorite charity.
