Deanna Kay (Werner) Jones passed away peacefully Sunday Aug 1st, 2021 of pancreatic cancer.

Deanna was born October 4, 1937 in Dodge City, Kansas, the only child of William Vernon and Agnes Anna Boal Werner. Her father worked for Northern Natural Gas Company, so Deanna lived in homes at N.N.G. plants in Greensburg, KS; between Liberal and Sublette, KS; Paullina, IA and Ogden, IA. The family moved to Paullina in 1947 and Ogden in 1952 and Deanna graduated from Ogden High School in 1955, where she had been active in band and speech activities.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years then taught in Grundy Center, IA. On June 14, 1958, she married Thomas Jones, her high school sweetheart, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. That fall the couple moved to Rolfe, IA, where Tom taught and Deanna attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake to get her B.A. in Elementary Education, graduating with honors in 1960.

In addition to Grundy Center, Deanna also taught at Rolfe, Madrid, United Community of Boone, and did many long-term substitute jobs at North Polk. Her favorite job was being a mother, and son, Kyle William, was born in 1961. The family moved to central Iowa in 1963 and lived on a farm near Alleman, where Tom was the Elementary Principal for North Polk. Daughter Rachelle Lynn was born in 1964 and Deanna enjoyed being involved in her children’s activities.

The couple built a home in Sheldahl and moved there in 1973. Deanna loved flowers and gardening, gospel and Big Band music, angels, reading, playing cards, campfires, outings with friends, attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities, family gatherings, traveling, Branson, and winters in Texas. She and Tom visited all 50 states and Canada and took several bus trips into Mexico while spending 20 of their winters in Weslaco, Texas.

Deanna was also active in the United Methodist Church in Sheldahl, serving United Methodist Women and on the church board in various positions, and teaching Sunday and Bible school. One of her greatest joys was when she and Tom were the U.M.Y.F. youth sponsors for 10 years. She enjoyed cultivating friendships and was active in P.E.O. Chapter ID, Madrid, Slater Garden Club, Alleman Town Club, Slater Library Book Club, Russ O’Hara Hosta Society of Des Moines, a bridge club which met for over 50 years and many Bible studies throughout the years.

Deanna was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim & Mary Jones; niece, Teresa Jones; nephew, Bruce Teague; and Tom’s parents, James and Loretta Jones.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Tom; two children, Kyle (Cindy Adams) of Sheldahl, and Rachelle (Mike) Breen of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Kurt (Canaa) Jones, Brent Jones, John Breen and Shelby Breen; two great-grandchildren, Gage & Riley Jones; and nieces Julie Tull and Jackie Teague.

Family will greet friends for a visitation at Slater United Methodist Church 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Wednesday, August 4, 2021.

A funeral service will be held 10:30am, Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021, also at Slater United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses, staff and Taylor House for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Sheldahl United Methodist Church, Slater Library or Hope Ministries of Des Moines.
