Dorothy "Dottie" Blewer

December 19, 1931 - November 27, 2016

Dorothy (Dottie) Mead Blewer passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016, at Taylor House Hospice surrounded by her family. Visitation Friday, December 2, 2016, 4 – 6 pm at the Ankeny Presbyterian Church, 317 SE Trilein Drive, Ankeny, Iowa, with a memorial service at Ankeny Presbyterian Church, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 10:30 am.
Dorothy Louise Mead was born on December 19, 1931 to Viola May (Stout) and George Washington Mead in Camden, New Jersey. She grew up in Washington Grove, Maryland, graduating from Gaithersburg High School in 1949. She attended State Teachers College in Salisbury, Maryland, finishing the Junior College program in 1951. While there, she participated in Women’s Basketball and the Christian Association. For the next eight years, she worked in Bethesda, Maryland.
On October 11, 1959, Dottie and Wayne Scofield Blewer were married at the Washington Grove United Methodist Church. Their first home was in Fayetteville, New York. They relocated to Chittenango, New York, and began to raise three daughters, Pamela, Karen and Diane. In 1968, the family moved to DeWitt, Iowa, where Dottie served as church secretary for the local Methodist church. After four years, the family moved to Bloomington, Illinois, where Dottie served as secretary for First Christian Church. In 1979, the family moved to Ankeny, Iowa, and Dottie began to work at Drake University in Des Moines, retiring in 2001.
Dottie enjoyed bowling, bridge, pinochle, Perky Penguins, Friendship Circle, Drake Retirees and women’s church groups. She also supported the Ankeny Community Theater and City of Ankeny day trips.
Dottie is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, in 2006, her parents, and her sisters, Roberta (Mead) Mellinger, in 1974, and Helen (Mead) Anderson, in 2005. She is survived by her daughters, Pam (Bob) Richardson of Cedar Rapids Iowa, Karen (Dan) Younkin of Iowa City, Iowa, and Diane (Ron) Rothfus of Woodward, Iowa, as well as five nieces, three nephews, and two grandsons.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vintage Hills and Taylor House Hospice for their care and service during the final years of Dottie’s life.
