Doug was my favorite cousin and good buddy. My earliest memory was when we were about 4 or 5 out at our grandparents farm running around unsupervised. My grandpa needed to feed us all so he went out to get one of his chickens. Doug and I were coming around the corner at the exact time that Grandpa chopped its head off. There was the chicken, running around with its head cut off. Literally! I totally freaked. I'm sure Doug thought it was the coolest thing ever. He became my hero that day when he protected me and has been ever since. As we grew up we remained close. When we were 17, I was so proud when he drove downtown Minneapolis to pick me up from work at Donaldson's. I got to show off my big, handsome cousin. He will be so very missed by so many but I know that we all will find comfort in our many good memories with him and his wonderful family. Vicki

Sorry for your loss. Big Doug was lots of fun to work with at the IDOT. We called him our plumber yet he always corrected us. One particular project I asked him to step forward to show everyone what he could truly do after getting more than his share of the dirtiest jobs being low man on the totem pole. The former Catholic Convent had been purchased by IDOT. The entire building was gutted. New everything was needed inside. I had a crew of Newton Reformatory inmates for this 2 year project. Doug agreed to install the new plumbing for the men's and women's restrooms in the basement. He and the inmates jackhammered the concrete floor, carried out the rubble, & installed the drain lines for all the toilet accessories. He did a great job & impressed everyone. Doug also enjoyed joking around. Paybacks were a son-of-a-gun. One day mother nature pulled a surprise on him. As he stepped out the shop entry door, a large ice cold drop of water from the leaking roof gutter splashed on top of his balding head. He dropped to his knees cursing our office for allowing new construction to make such an error. We all fell over laughing as only Doug could have that happen. We missed his wisdom when he retired after his heart attack. He explained he was going to enjoy life to the fullest. That he did, sometimes calling for carpentry advice. He lived his life the way he wanted. He was a great guy.
