“Jim” was born on May 4, 1934 in Waterloo, IA to James Arble and Helen Sophie McNamee. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1952 and then went on to attend Wartburg College in Waverly, IA.

Jim married the love of his life, Barbara (Harris) McNamee, on June 24, 1956. During this time, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. degree in 1957. That same year, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country for two years. Following his time serving, Jim graduated from the University of Iowa Dental School in 1963. Jim practiced dentistry in Ankeny, IA for 33 years. After retiring in June 1996, he and Barb became snowbirds and went to Florida for over 20 years to escape Iowa’s harsh winters, however they always returned home to spend the holiday season with their family.

Jim and Barb shared a strong passion for travel and were active members of the “Friendship Force”, an international organization made up of hosts from all over the world who would open up their homes to foreign guests. Throughout the years, the couple visited over 17 countries. Aside from traveling, Jim also enjoyed golfing, playing racquetball, water and snow skiing, horseback riding, and doing volunteer work. Nothing, however, brought Jim more joy than spending time with his family. Whether it was helping out at a horse show, or attending sporting events, Jim provided an unwavering support system through every season of life for his family. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the Ankeny Lions Club. Jim and Barb were also members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (Ankeny, IA).

Left to cherish a lifetime full of memories is his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara; their children, Denise (Ken) Hummel, Pam (Mike) Morrison, and Jamie (Denise) McNamee; brother, Robert (Barb) McNamee; and grandchildren, Ashley (Blake) LaFollette, Lauren Morrison, Mackenzie Morrison, Andrew (Marissa) Hummel, Jana Hummel, and Josh McNamee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
