Fred Bolte, 82, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 9, 2023.
Fred was born April 6, 1941, and grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from North High School, where he played multiple sports, Fred began working at John Deere in Ankeny, where he worked for over three decades. He married Virginia “Ginger” Gimer in 1963, and after moving to Ankeny in 1965, Fred and Ginger were blessed with two children, Lori and Curt. Fred worked every shift he could to provide for his family.
Soon before retiring from John Deere, Fred opened his sports card and memorabilia store, Who’s On First. Over the next two decades, the store brought joy to collectors throughout the community, but it also brought his family even closer. He loved cheering on his Hawkeyes, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and theatrical events, and studying his ancestry, but his greatest passion was being with his family. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his life. He will be remembered most for his sturdy hands, warm hugs, and generous heart.
Fred is survived by his wife, Ginger; three grandchildren: Crystal Muehlenthaler, Brandon (Kate) Bolte, and Brett Bolte; daughter-in-law Kim Bolte; son-in-law Mark Muehlenthaler; nephew and nieces Robert, Vicki, and Michelle; and great-grandson Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Florence Bolte, his brother and sister Robert and Shirley, his daughter Lori Muehlenthaler, and son Curt Bolte.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.), followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
The family welcomes flowers, but would appreciate memorial contributions to be made to North High School’s athletics program in Des Moines to support their football and/or wrestling.
