Fred Long, 86, of Ankeny passed away October 23, 2017.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2017 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (206 S.W. Walnut). A visitation will be held 5 – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26th, at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd).
Fred was born Sept. 26, 1931 in Hamburg, Iowa to Summers and Judy Long. He graduated from Skidmore High School in 1949. He married Jean Hartman in 1952, and enlisted with the US Marine Corps, where he served for 3 years.
Following his honorable discharge, they made their home in Ankeny, where they raised 5 children. Fred was proud of his part time work as an Ankeny Police officer for 7 years, wearing badge #4. He retired from DICO Manufacturing as Vice President of sales after 31 years of service.
He enjoyed golfing, playing steel guitar, and spending time with his family.
Fred is survived by his children, Debbie (Willie) Brown, Connie (Rick) Huff, Robin (Mike) Maggert, Mike Long, and Mark (Marci) Long; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jean; his parents, and 5 siblings.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to his church, or N.A.M.I.(National Alliance on Mental Illness).
