Gertie Bernice Mooers

August 9, 1925 - February 6, 2021

Gerti Bernice Watne Mooers was born on August 9, 1925 to Sven and Sophie Watne and earned her angel wings on February 6, 2021. She was the oldest of 5 girls and one boy. She grew up in the Garden City/Radcliffe area. She attended and graduated from Nevada High School. She then met the love of her life, Wayne Mooers and they were married October 8, 1944. Wayne was in the military and they moved to North Carolina.

In North Carolina they welcomed their first child to their family. The family then moved back to Iowa. It was here they decided to raise their family and welcomed 4 more sons and a daughter.

Wayne and Bernice enjoyed going to their cabin on Leech Lake in Walker, MN. They loved fishing together and being on the lake. Wayne and Bernice were also active bowlers.

Bernice was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield and retired from there after 20 years. Wayne was also retired by then and they decided to spend winters in Weslaco, Tx. After several years spending winters there, they decided to buy a place and call it home. Bernice resided in Texas until 2003.   After the death of Wayne, Bernice decided to move back to the Des Moines area to be close to her family.

Bernice enjoyed knitting, all types of needle work, and coloring in her color books.

Bernice is survived by her sons; Bruce, Dennis (Sue), Larry (Sandy), William (Jeri) and daughter Sue Wilson, 3 sisters; Irene Norem, Dorothy State and Geraldine Brown, 1 sister-in-law; Wanda Schultz, 36 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; Sven and Sophie Watne, husband; Wayne Mooers, son & daughter-in-law; Steven and Lila Mooers, daughter-in-law; Cheryl Mooers, brother; Omar Watne, sister & brother-in-law; Signe and Robert Raska, brother-in-laws; Lee Norem, grandson; Troy Mooers, great-grandson; Theo Hellmers.

A visitation will be 1:00-2:00 p.m., February 15, 2021 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). Graveside service will be immediately following and will be live streamed.
