Howard Lee Justice, son of Ralph W. and Alta Chamberlain, was born March 31, 1931 in Manilla, Iowa. He departed from this life on Saturday, December 12th. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 pm at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, December 18th. Due to COVID there will be a private burial service on Saturday, December 19th. Memorials may be made in Howard’s memory to American Cancer Society.

He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Manilla, and later, was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, Iowa. He attended country school until fifth grade. Howard then continued his education in Manilla, graduating in 1949. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Simpson College and his Master’s Degree from Northwest Missouri State.

In 1952, Howard was united in marriage to Norma J. Stegeman. They were blessed with three children, Vickie, Steve and Craig. Howard coached high school football at Fontanelle, Exira, Estherville and Atlantic, Iowa, before entering the college ranks. He coached at Iowa State, the University of Maryland, West Illinois and Drake University. He ended his coaching career as head coach at Hoover High in Des Moines. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1990. For eight years, he managed his own lawn service, and he retired permanently in 1998. Howard had a great love of football. He was a member of Kappa Theta Psi, Iowa Football Association and National Coaches’ Association. He was inducted into the coaches’ Hall of fame in the early 90’s. His favorite hobby was woodworking. He spent many hours each day in the shop during retirement, making many beautiful pieces out of various woods. Most of Howard’s projects were for family, friends and his church.

Howard has been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ankeny since 1972. He held numerous positions within the church during his years there. Howard and Norma enjoyed many camping trips with their RV and spent many winters in the southern states. He enjoyed the fall of the year, watching both Iowa and Iowa State University play football. He was a fan of both.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, sister-in-law and his wife, Norma in 2018.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Vickie (Greg) Peterson of Phoenix, AZ; sons, Steve (Christine) of Waukee, IA and Craig (Melody) of Waukee, IA. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Melosina (Jordan) Latva of Herriman, UT; his grandsons Grant Peterson (Lindsay) of Scottsdale, AZ, Ryan Justice (Trisha) of Liberty Hill, TX and Andrew Justice of Adel, IA. Howard has 7 great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to the people from At Home Care and Wesley Life for their loving care and support during his final days. Also, the family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Howard’s memory to American Cancer Society.
