Janice Frederick, 83, of Ankeny, passed away peacefully May 5, 2018 surrounded by family after a very brief stay at Mercy Hospital. She unexpectedly passed on Cinco de Mayo due to an exacerbation of COPD. Her lungs gave up after a long battle.
A visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 10th at Ankeny Memorial Gardens (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). A Funeral Mass will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 11th at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church in Ankeny (510 E 1st St).
Born and raised in Melrose. She was the baby of 10 kids. Moved to Des Moines at 16 and graduated from North High School. Married Bob Frederick and had 5 children and lived in Elkhart early on in marriage, then moved and remained in Ankeny. She retired from Central Life Insurance at 55.
Jan loved life and had a way of making others laugh. She especially loved children. She enjoyed line-dancing and listening to country music, adored Ray Price and Alan Jackson. Road trips to Branson were a favorite, also camping and a good bonfire, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows (she liked hers burnt). She loved boating and going to Clear Lake. She was an avid sports fan rooting for her teams: Cubs, Packers, Dodgers, Hawkeyes, Notre Dame and any underdog out there. She was a devout Catholic.
She is survived by her children, Doug Frederick, Lori Ayala (Steve Kelling), Lysa (Bill) Youngquist, Leslie Frederick, all of Ankeny , her grandchildren, John Vaughan, Troy Frederick, Nick and Marie Ayala, Allyson, Janna, Billy and Bobby Youngquist, and 1 great-grandson Jameson and 1 great-granddaughter on the way. Have to give a shout out to her 98 year old sister Mildred McClavy who she loved talking on the phone with daily.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bob Frederick, her son Don Frederick, and her grandson Josh Vaughan, and 8 siblings.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to do something special for her.
