Jimmie Lyle Bennett, 79, of Ankeny, IA, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, after a courageous 10-year battle with Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 26, 2021, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st Street). A visitation will be held 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. followed by a prayer vigil, Sunday, July 25, 2021, also at the church.

Jim was born July 10, 1942 in Seymour, IA, to Melvin Bennett and Jennie (Stiman) Mortley. He was raised in Des Moines, IA.  After graduating from East High School in 1961 he joined the U.S Army where he proudly served his country.

Jim met and married Barbara (Wood) Bennett in March 1974, when as he would tell you, his life actually began. They were blessed to share 47 years together.  He was the very proud father of his three children: Jimmie Jr, Brianna, and Kristina and enjoyed every minute of his time with his seven grandchildren.

Jim used his mechanical skills and ingenuity through his years and careers at Goodyear and Colonial Baking Co. He retired multiple times, but often found himself back at work at the Des Moines Public Schools or Mercy Hospital due to his need to work hard and be useful.  Those jobs gave him opportunities to use his training and also to develop the social skills we have all benefited from, particularly as he entered into his medical challenges and won over the hearts of all who attended to him.

Jim loved his family, his friends and his faith community. He was a proud life-long member of the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in the growth and development of CEW.  He was a quiet man with an ornery sense of humor and a genuine desire to be of service.  He loved spending time with his family and his friends, travelling to exciting places, being first on the golf course and finding special gifts for his wife.

Jim was loved and cherished by his wife, Barbara; son, Jimmie (Jennifer) of Johnston; daughters, Brianna (Scott) Valentine of Bondurant, and Krissy Bennett of Des Moines; grandchildren, Bailey, Jenna and Gracie Bennett, Tanner and Kylie Valentine, Angelina Maher, and Cora Bennett-Latimer; brother, Richard (Deb) Bennett-Woods; sisters, Cheryl (Ron) Deveraux, Vicky (Martin) Huffy and Debbie (Bill) Wade; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and his many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Jerry and Michael; and sisters, Pam Winchester and Susan Mitchell.

Jim’s family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to all his medical teams. Dr. Brian Freeman and Angie, staff and nurses, Dr. Deanna Questad and her nurses and staff, and Dr. Jennifer Goerbig-Campbell. The additional years his family received with him was thanks to all of you.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
