ANKENY – IA Representative John Robert Landon, 71, passed away on July 29, 2021

Visitation will be held 4:00 pm-7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N Ankeny Blvd-Ankeny).  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Prairie Ridge Church, (825 NW 36th St.-Ankeny).

John was born on March 7, 1950 in Marshalltown, IA to Helen (Woodward) and Laverne  Landon. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from West Marshall HS in 1968. John served in the US Navy Seabees with honorable discharge before graduating with a degree in Ag business from Iowa State University in 1975. While at ISU John was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where he made many lifetime friends. In 2013 he was inducted into the Iowa Gold Star Hall of Fame at Camp Dodge Iowa for his military service.

He married Marvis Ridgely on February 28, 1987. They raised a son, Eric, and a daughter, Morgan, with love. John often said that the only thing he aspired to was to be a good husband, father, and grandfather. These he attained and in turn, he was proud of and enjoyed his children and grandchildren.  John was a Cub Scout den leader in the late 90’s and assistant scout leader for troop 188 Boy Scouts in Ankeny for many years until 2006.  He was a follower of Christ and served as a deacon at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ankeny until 2015.

After working 27 years in the grain business and 9 years in farm management and real estate as a partner at Peoples Company, John was elected as State Representative to IA House District 37. He served in that office from January 2013 until his death. As a statesman, John was known as an honorable, trusted and dedicated servant leader.  He was universally respected for his honesty, integrity and his work ethic. He was also managing the family farms, a lifetime passion, at the time of his death.

John’s hobbies were reading history books, listening to 60’s and 70’s music, fishing, boating, traveling inside and outside of the US, and trading and driving fast cars.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his father, Laverne, and his mother, Helen. He is survived by his wife, Marvis; his two children, Eric (Rebecca Schmidt) and Morgan (Alan) Lanzel; three grandchildren, Owen and Christopher Landon and Leona Lanzel; two brothers, Allan (Sue) and Roger (Linda) Landon; and multiple nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John Landon Memorial Fund and mailed to PO Box 909 Ankeny, IA 50021 or delivered to the visitation or funeral.
