John Vernon Flemming, of Ankeny, Iowa passed away at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa on November 26, 2022, just eight days before his 88th birthday.

Visitation will be held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st St., Ankeny) from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. A Rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m. prior to the visitation, and a prayer service will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, officiated by Fr. Michael Amadeo, also at the church. Interment will immediately follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

John was born to Frank Theodore Flemming and Veronica Mary (Cauley) Flemming near Florence, South Dakota. He worked on the family farm and graduated with honors from Watertown High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 and in the Reserve Corps from 1959 to 1963. He married Janice Ruth Ries of Kranzburg, SD, on October 11, 1960. They lived in Watertown, SD, Cresco, IA, and Ankeny, IA, and raised six children. John worked most of his life in the construction industry and drove a bus for Link Associates Transportation Services for 17 years after retiring. John has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1971. He especially enjoyed making hand-made wooden gifts for his family.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Veronica Flemming; brother, Bernard Flemming; sister, Mary Jo Flemming; and grandson, Alexander Ewy.

John is survived by his faithful wife of 62 years, Janice Flemming of Ankeny IA; brothers, Vincent (Shirley) Flemming of Wakonda, SD, Paul (Connie) Flemming of Florence, SD, and Francis Flemming of Watertown, SD; sister, Madelyn Kozitza of Burnsville, MN; sons, Joe (Kim) Flemming of Tijeras, NM, James (Shauna) Flemming of Lambertville, NJ, Jerry Flemming of Iowa Park, TX, and Pat (Denise) Flemming of Dekalb, IL; daughters, Dr. Donna (Charles) Ewy and Darlene Fritz, both of Wichita, KS; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The Flemming Family would like to express gratitude to the staff at MercyOne Medical Center, Bishop Drumm Care Center, and Suncrest Hospice, who provided high quality and compassionate care for John Flemming during the final three months of his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s name to Link Associates, Suncrest Home Health and Hospice of West Des Moines, or Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny.
