Lorris (Nelson) Barkema, 91, died Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Israel Hospice House in Ames, IA. Private burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell, IA at a later date.

Lorris Joan was born February 8, 1932, near Jewell to Sterling and Esther (Olson) Nelson. A 1949 graduate of Jewell Public Schools, Lorris was united in marriage to Richard Barkema on January 21, 1951 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Lorris and Richard were blessed with three children, Marcella Esther, Murray Richard, and Marshall Scott. They farmed north of Jewell for 20 years and eventually owned and operated Barkema Insurance and Real Estate in Murray, IA until retirement. Lorris moved to Story City in 2015.

Lorris is survived by daughter, Marcy Johnson of Story City, IA; son, Marshall (Jolene) Barkema of Ankeny, IA; three grandchildren, Tricia Johnson (John Ramirez) of Oak Park IL, Brooke (Steve) Hermann of Story City, IA, and Chris (Kelly) Johnson of Ankeny, IA; five great-grandchildren, Olivia and Rees Tyler, Luciana Ramirez, and Caleb and Claire Johnson; sister, Sheryl Nelson (Gordon Creswell) of Santa Rosa, CA; sister-in-law, Rose Ware of Alvarado TX; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Lorris in death were her husband, Richard; son, Murray; grandson, Zachary; son-in-law, Steve Johnson; and brothers, Eugene, Frank, and Ernest Nelson.

Her family cherishes her memory as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and the best mother-in-law a girl could ask for! She was “one in a million” to many others.
