Marilyn Jean (Hovde) Thompson, 90, of rural Boone, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Bethany Life in Story City.

Marilyn, daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Christenson) Hovde, was born on July 5, 1932 at their home in rural Hardin County.  As a young girl, the family moved to Roland where they made their home.  She graduated from Roland High School in 1950 and then worked at the Iowa Highway Commission. She married Ronald Thompson on September 12, 1954.  The city girl moved to the country and spent her entire life right alongside her husband, son and two daughters while they farmed in Dallas and Boone counties raising Registered Hereford cattle.  She continued helping her son after her husband of 53 years died in 2008. She was an excellent cook, and known for the good meals she provided anyone helping on the farm, complete with dessert and homemade rolls, even if given a last-minute notice.  She loved hosting her extended family for holiday meals.  No one left her house hungry.

Her life was her family, extended family, friends, and neighbors.  She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, excellent seamstress, loved gardening and flowers, refinishing furniture, family antiques, stray animals, and anything outdoors, including sledding with her grandsons. She was involved in anything her children were involved in and was very proud of her four grandsons.  Her Lutheran faith and her Norwegian heritage were important to her from the time she was a young girl. She was an active member of every church she was a member of over the years.  She oversaw the Lefse baking for the Scandinavian Coffee held annually at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames for many years.

Marilyn is survived by her son, Paul Thompson (Boone); daughters, Lori (Kent) Fehr (Omaha, NE), Karen (David) Noftsger (Clive); grandsons, Grant Fehr, Andrew Fehr, Jacob Noftsger and Joshua Noftsger; sister-in-law, Georgia Hovde (Webster City); nieces Debbie Lindeman and Sharon (Paul) Gerr; and brother-in-law Rodger Thompson (Ames).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron; parents, brother, LaVerne Hovde, sister, Shirley Hovde, and parents-in-law, James and Wilma Thompson.

The family wishes to express their thanks to all the individuals and organizations that assisted Marilyn in the last year.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marilyn Thompson Memorial Fund, PO Box 909, Ankeny, IA 50021.
