Mark Benda, 84, of Ankeny, Iowa (formerly of Forest City) passed away peacefully on Monday, May 3, 2021, in Ankeny. A private family service will be held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church in Ankeny on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 10:30 a.m.  The service will be livestreamed at https://www.olih.org/funeral-announcements

Mark was born October 3, 1936, to Edward and Frances (Holecek) Benda in Jackson, Minnesota. Upon graduating from high school, Mark enlisted in the Air Force serving in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Labrador.  He later continued his education at Mankato State University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Business Education.

On October 22, 1955, Mark married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Lucille Greeney, in Waseca, Minnesota.  Together they raised four children. Mark began his 35-year teaching career in Titonka, Iowa and later taught in Forest City as a Business Ed/Geography teacher and boys’ golf coach.

Mark had a passion for golf, reading, model trains, and oil painting. He was active in his church and was a member of the Music Ministry and Knights of Columbus.  Mark was an avid reader and a past president of the Forest City Library Board.  Every football season, he could be found in front of a television cheering on his Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Mark is survived by his wife, Pat; four children, Pam (Cary) Christensen of Ankeny, IA, Chris (Jennifer) Benda of Gilbert, IA, Mary (Stan) Guthrie of Clive, IA, Steve (Tammy) Benda of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren, Sara (Nick) Lupkes, Katie Christensen, Libby (Travis) Clark, Brynann (fiancé Chris Alley) Benda, Jake Benda, Sammy Benda, Taryn Guthrie; and seven great-grandchildren, Morgan, Adelyn, Hudson, and Isla Lupkes and Ellie, Payton, and Kinsley Clark.  Also surviving are his brother, Jim (Anne) Benda of Aitkin, MN and sister-in-law Mary Harter of Waseca, MN.  Mark was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church, Ankeny.
