Forever in our hearts as a man of wit, Mark Schmidt was a man who loved family, faith, and fishing.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (460 NW Washington Ave., Elkhart, IA). Funeral Mass will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, also at the church. Burial will immediately follow mass at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mark was born in Spencer, Iowa to parents Garlene and Virgil Schmidt. He was raised in and around Titonka, Iowa and spent many of his formative years spending time with his grandparents, Fred and Jenny Gray. Mark graduated from Algona High School in 1981 and completed an associates degree in electrical engineering at Iowa Central Community College in 1983. Upon his graduation from high school, Mark immediately enrolled in the Marine Corps Reserve program and completed his training the summer of 1981 in San Diego. Mark completed numerous credits in continuing education from DeVry University in Kansas City and always maintained a passion for deconstruction and rebuilding. Mark’s family knew him as Mr. Fix-It.

As a family man, Mark was a fierce protector and someone who always put his family first. As an avid fisherman, he loved readying his boat every year for the annual trip to Minnesota. Though the fish weren’t always plentiful, Mark always enjoyed this trip as a way to be with family and for extra time with the men in his family. He could often be found tinkering in the garage or watching MeTV side by side with his wife whom he loved dearly. He was a loving son and an excellent role model to his daughters. Through his example, he taught them how to stand up for themselves, always be kind, and never take yourself too seriously.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Schmidt; two daughters, Leah and Geena Schmidt; caring mother, Garlene Schmidt; sister and brother-in-law, Natalie and Ron Becker; two nephews, Matt and Jake Becker; as well as a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by father, Virgil Schmidt as well as grandparents, Fred and Jenny Gray and Paul and Lucy Schmidt. Though his own time was cut too short, Mark would want us all to “Live long and prosper.”

In lieu of flowers, the family would request memorials be made out to Ruth Harbor House or Dorothy’s House.

**The family respectfully asks that everyone attending the visitation and funeral please wear a mask.**
