Marlow Scott Cowan, God’s faithful servant, was welcomed joyfully home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thurs. May 12, 2016. Please join us for a celebration of Marlow’s life at the Lutheran Church of Hope, 520 NW 36th Street Ankeny, Iowa 50023, 3:30pm Sun. May 15, 2016.Marlow was an only child born Feb. 19, 1919 in Rochester, Minnesota to Frank and Bertha Cowan. He married Frances Deforest his musical love of his life in 1947. Together as a team they selflessly shared their God-given musical gifts with the entire world as seen on You-Tube. When Marlow was 5 yrs. old he learned to play piano & began entertaining guests in his parent’s boarding house. At age 14 he played ragtime piano stage shows as well as played accordion in adult bands & orchestras around Rochester. His life was all about serving God and blessing others through music as well as organizing fun recreational activities for people of all ages. He also loved the out of doors and organized many white water adventure canoe, rafting and camping trips. While at ISU he obtained a BS degree in Horticulture and later a Masters Degree in Social Work. Marlow served his country in the army in WWII in the Philippines & entertained the troops. For 16 years he directed the Des Moines YMCA Camp where he created a storybook tale camp for kids turning make- believe stories into real life adventures. With the start of the the YMCA Boys Chorus & Bell Ringers he provided opportunities for children of all ages to sing, ring bells and perform comedy skits taking trips all over the world bringing joy to others. Marlow was also passionate about typing hundreds of letters of encouragement, communicating with people everywhere, by US mail. As creator and owner of the CBR worldwide hand bell repair service he took special pride and joy in making their bells look like new and thoroughly enjoyed talking with his clients. Marlow loved and enjoyed making people laugh; he loved his Lord, dearly cherished and loved Frances and would do anything for his family. His life was truly devoted in service to others. We will miss him so very much!Marlow is survived by his wife Frances DeForest Cowan of Ankeny, IA; 4 children son Greg Cowan (Starlyn) of Colorado Spring, Co.; son Glen Cowan (Wanda) of Indianola, IA, daughter DeDe Cowan Shour (Mark) of Maxwell, IA; son Scott Cowan (Elizabeth) of Mattawan, MI; 13 grandchildren, & 10 great grandchildren.
