Martin Anthon Foster

Martin “Marty” Anthon Foster passed away in his sleep after being transferred to the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls on the morning of March 19, 2022 at the age of 67 after several health challenges in recent years. Marty was born April 17, 1954, in Akron, Ohio to Calvin Tucker Foster and Edith “Sandy” Louise (Ahlstrom) Foster. He was primarily raised in Ankeny, Iowa where he had a large presence running track until he graduated high school in 1972. Marty went on to graduate from Wartburg College with a Bachelor of Social Services in 1976.
Marty married Robin Hurd (now divorced) in 1990 with whom he shares three daughters and eight grandchildren, as well as numerous other “adopted” kids.
Though he faced his struggles in life, Marty always had an interesting sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. Marty loved dogs and had several throughout his life. He mostly tolerated cats, but they grew on him also. He enjoyed nature, fishing off and on throughout his life, and gardening when he could. He would always try to grow new plants, though he learned the hard way to leave cacti alone in Arizona. Marty had a strong interest in history and enjoyed spending time playing strategy games.
Marty was preceded in death by both parents, Calvin and Sandy Foster; and nephew, Peter Foster.
He is survived by his children, Angela Joan (Jason) Krause, Cynthia Lynn (Heath) Anderson, and Amanda Darlene (Arlo) North; grandchildren, Jacob Krause, Katie Krause, Emma Krause, Tucker (Michael) Anderson, Lilli Anderson, Olivia Anderson, Callen North and Devereaux North; siblings, Calvin Philip (Deb) Foster, Valerie (Mike) Hanneman, and Jennifer (Tim) Foster-Krueger; as well as seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial and visitation with family will be held at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD on April 1, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Interment will take place April 5, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Ankeny Memorial Gardens in Ankeny, Iowa.
