Beautiful service this Saturday morning for a great guy -- thanks for streaming it on the Internet for those of us who couldn't be with you in person. As you've read in many Facebook postings from so many of us who were Marv's colleagues at the Register, and earlier the Tribune, he was one of the most solid journalists most of us ever knew. That was evident in the jobs he held at the newspapers. He often worked the late shifts, later the early shifts, where he would be the person making critical decisions about what we should do with breaking news situations all over Iowa. When those of us who were on the reporting and writing end of things would get the call from Marv Hastings, we knew it was time to roll -- and we did. But it was in the less hectic times -- slack times with lots of conversation, ball games, newsroom parties -- that we all came to enjoy him so much. Your remarks during the service this morning captured him perfectly. We'll all miss him!
