Mary Johnson, 88, died unexpectedly Saturday, December 25, 2021 in Ankeny, Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2021, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (206 SW Walnut St., Ankeny, IA 50023). Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at 1:45 p.m. at the Earlham Cemetery in Earlham, IA. Mary was born May 13, 1933, in Earlham, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Herbert Lester Johnson in Earlham. To this union four children were born. Mary and Herb lived in Georgia, New Jersey and Arlington, Virginia during Herb’s time in the United States Army. After his service was completed they lived in Cumberland, Iowa for several years. They then moved to Ankeny in 1963.
Mary graduated from Earlham High School, then went on to work and retired from Northwestern Bell/U.S. West from 1968 to 1995. She was a member of Ankeny First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, Eastern Star, Ruth Circle, Solo group and TOPS. Mary was a very social person and was quick to always check in with her friends if she missed a meeting. Mary liked to be very involved in her groups and cherished the lunch outings. She loved her many trips to California and working part time for her son, Larry. She loved the years her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Megan, stayed at her house while attending Drake University. Mary enjoyed attending her church, Eastern Star, music events and picnics with her many friends and family. Mary loved to attend family reunions as well. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and grand dogs.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Rick) Donalson of Poway, California; sons, Michael (Jenell) Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Larry (Jody) Johnson, and Brian (Julie) Johnson all of Ankeny, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, David Strong of Lakewood, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Jacob Johnson.
