Maxine was born in Lovilia, Iowa on January 31, 1926 to Pearl D. and Edith V. (Riseley) Robbins. She was raised and attended school in Lovilia, Iowa. In 10th grade, her family moved to North Kansas City, Missouri where she graduated from high school in 1944 and worked several jobs. She married Leo I. McCombs on December 13, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas after correspondence with him while he was in the U.S. Army Air Force. They moved to Polk City in 1951.
Maxine dreamed of being a mother and after a long struggle with infertility, she was blessed with two sons; David and Mark. After the birth of her sons, Maxine dedicated her life to being a mom. She was a proud member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and held several offices over the years including Presidency. She was highly involved in these organizations and loved attending the events, especially the dances and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Maxine volunteered for over 30 years on the election board. She was a great bowler and took pride in coaching her sons’ junior bowling leagues. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing, traveling, her time at the senior center and with her birthday club but most of all, spending time with family and friends. Maxine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, David and wife Peggy of Polk City and Mark and his wife Sherry of Davenport, five grandchildren; Sarah (Ryan), Megan (Mike), Bryan (Theresa), Nicole, Mitchell, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo I. McCombs; four siblings, Juanita, Leora, Irene, and Charlie and numerous other family members.
