Rosemary (McKinney) Martin, 85-years-old, died on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at her home in Ankeny, Iowa. After her early fight with Breast Cancer in 1988, Rosemary’s battle resumed in November 2011 with Breast Cancer that had spread to her liver. Her strong will to live, her unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends, and many supporters carried her through 4 more years of Chemotherapy. Yet even throughout her own struggle with Cancer, she continued to reach out to family, friends, and others, always ready to offer her support and prayers.

Rosemary was born on March 8, 1929 in Rock Island, Illinois to Patrick and Mercy McKinney. The older of two children, her younger brother died as an infant.

After graduating from Rock Island High School and being named to the National Honor Society, she met her Sweetheart, Richard Martin, during a roller skating outing sponsored by the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization). The couple was married the following year on March 7, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Church in Rock Island, Illinois.

Married for 62 years, Rosemary & Richard raised their four children, Michael, Roseann, Patrick and Robert over the years in Illinois and finally in Des Moines, Iowa. Possessing a truly great heart, Rosemary faithfully cared for family and friends through delicious cooking and baking – including cakes and cookies; in addition to sewing and crafts. A woman of faith and the heart of the Martin family, Rosemary shaped their spirituality by her tireless Christian example, and also through various Catholic outreach groups and activities. With a genuine love for life, Rosemary loved to travel – visiting family members in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to wintering in Texas and Arizona.

Rosemary is proceeded in death by her parents as well as her brother. She is survived by her husband as well as her four children, three grandchildren Emily, Jeff, and John Michael, and five great-grandchildren, Mason, Maggie, Jack, Merowe, and Lilith.

The Martin family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at John Stoddard Oncology Department for their continued support and assistance. Please provide any memorials and/or donations to the John Stoddard Oncology Department.
