Orville was born December 21, 1927 in Polk County, Iowa to Emmet and Irene Carlson, and was a graduate of Sheldahl High School. He went on to serve two years during the Korean War in the 40th Infantry Division of the US Army.
After returning home from the war, he married his long time sweetheart, Gretchen Bryant, July 3, 1954 in the Little Brown Church, in Nashua, Iowa.
He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad after high school. Following his return from the war, he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber for 30 years until his retirement.
He belonged to the United Rubber Workers Union Local #310, the American Legion Post #42 in Ankeny, and the Sheldahl United Methodist Church.
After retirement, Orville and Gretchen spent several winters in Mesa, AZ, and Mission, TX, until health reasons kept them home.
Orville will be dearly missed by his wife Gretchen, of almost 63 years; their children, Jodi (Greg) Peterson of Nevada, Julie (Steve) Hidder, and Kelly (Kim) Carlson of Ankeny; 6 grandchildren, Brandon Ross, Melissa Peterson (Ryan), Justin Peterson, Jennifer Ross, Brittany and Brock Carlson, step grandson Michael (Dejian) Hidder; 2 step great-grandsons, Weston and Oliver Hidder; a sister Betty Leonard, and 2 brothers, Donald (Dualla) Carlson and Richard (Neva) Carlson.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Sunny View Care Center and Mercy Hospital for their kind and gentle care for Orville during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sheldahl United Methodist Church or Albaugh – McGovern Post #42.
