Robert Franklin Harrison, 83, of Ankeny, died Monday, February 19, 2024, as a result of complications from RSV.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). Burial will follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

Robert “Bob” was born May 24, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, MO to Floyd V. and Margaret R. (Day) Harrison.

Bob graduated from Ankeny High School in 1958, and attended Iowa State University before embarking on a career in journalism. He worked as a reporter, photographer, and editor during a 38-year career with The Register-Mail in Galesburg, IL. He was the daily paper’s editor-in-chief for 18 years before retiring in May 2001. As editor emeritus, he continued to contribute editorials for the paper – the vast majority of which expressed opinions that were probably right.

He also had a love of farming and helped work and manage his family farm in Ankeny, weathering the ups and downs of the business with humor, grit and grace.

A licensed private pilot, Bob was deeply involved with the National Stearman Fly-In in Galesburg. He served three years as president of the board, and before that was board secretary for many years. In 2023, he was designated Director Emeritus. He also served as president of the Fly-In’s parent organization, the National Stearman Foundation, Inc.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Sharon L. Harrison; sons, Robert D. Harrison and David G. Harrison; sister, Joy E. Harrison; grandsons, Samuel J., Riley J. and Henry W.; and granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, William D. Harrison.

A celebration of life event is being planned for late April for those who wish to gather and share their memories of Bob.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Stearman Foundation. Details can be found at www.stearmanfoundation.org.
