Roy was born July 8, 1930, in rural Cumming, Iowa, to Lester and Teresa (King) Bishop. He began his schooling at Norwalk Consolidated Schools. In 1945, his family moved to their rural Ankeny farm and Roy finished his education at Bondurant, graduating in 1948.

Roy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 – 1953. After being honorably discharged, he resumed his life-long career of farming and raising hogs.

On May 23, 1954, Roy was united in marriage to the love of his life, Florence (Bridge). They first made their home in rural Ankeny and later moved to the family farm where they spent the rest of their married life together. This union was blessed with two children, Ann (McGregor) and Ted.

First and foremost, Roy loved his family. He also loved farming and would enthusiastically discuss anything farm related. He and Florence enjoyed traveling and took many family vacations over the years. He especially loved the beauty of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and in western Canada. Roy was an avid photographer and loved taking professional grade photos of all his travels. He also did portrait photography for many years based out of his home.

Roy was a member of the American Legion Post 396 in Bondurant as well as the Polk County Farm Bureau. He served for many years as a Douglas Township Trustee. He also served on the Associate Board at the Bondurant Farmers Coop.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Florence; his daughter, Ann (Steve) McGregor of Charles City, IA; his son, Ted (Teri) Bishop of rural Ankeny; six grandchildren: Aaron (Jen) McGregor of Bloomfield, IA; Phillip McGregor of Charlotte, NC; Elizabeth (David) Charlson of Urbandale, IA; Kate (Matt) Lesan of Nevada, IA; Kelsi (Nick) Newcomb of Bondurant; and Scott (Sarah) Bishop of Bondurant. Others left to mourn his loss are fourteen great-grandchildren: Gabi, Reagan, Tyler, Ben, Layla, Sam, Mariya, Bella, Wesley, Eva, Myles, Bently, Ellie, and Emily.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Teresa; his brother, Donald “Bill” (Ruth) Bishop; his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Lester) Pope, and grandson, John McGregor.
