Ruth Ann Evans, age 92, passed away at Taylorsville House Memory Care on December 28, 2023.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024, also at the funeral home with burial at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

Born on August 11, 1931, in Williamson, Iowa, Ruth grew up on the family farm. The chores Ruth didn’t like were churning the milk to make butter and gathering the eggs. “The chickens pecked me.”

Ruth graduated from Chariton High School and then earned her R.N. at Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She worked at Drake University, Iowa Lutheran Home for the Aged and most of her career at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Ruth worked primarily in mental health since 1975. She provided excellent patient care and was loved by all who met her.

She was united in marriage to Gene Schneider, and they had their only child, Jane. Ruth was an excellent mother, mentor, and best friend to Jane; they were very close. Ruth loved her grandchildren Alex and Kaitlyn beyond words and was also blessed with getting to know her only great-granddaughter, Gabbie.

Ruth remarried in 2011 to her childhood crush, Bill Evans. She was very happy during their marriage until Bill passed in July 2012.

Ruth enjoyed family gatherings, sewing, needlework, especially counted cross stitch. Ruth also loved to garden and grow vegetables and peace roses.  Ruth’s favorite trip was her trip to the British Isles. She enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Oregon and Washington State to see family.

Ruth is preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Schneider; her second husband, Bill Evans; her parents, Frances and David Neighbour; her sister, Janet Ashby (Harry); and her grandson, Alex Gilchrist. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jane Gilchrist; her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Gilchrist; great-granddaughter, Gabbie Gilchrist, and many sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
