Shirley L. Horton, 90, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Newark Valley, New York, died September 25, 2023. Shirley was born November 25, 1932, in Dryden, New York. She was the daughter of Winston and Katheryn (Newlon) Givens and the wife of Rev. Howard D. Horton. Together Shirley and Howard recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Shirley was a graduate of Newark Valley Central School (class of 1951). Prior to marriage, she served a missions internship in Cuba. She was a pastor’s wife and a longtime employee of IBM (Owego, New York).

Visitation with the Horton family will be held at Ankeny Baptist Church, 2842 SW Third Street, Ankeny, Iowa, on September 30, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Hope Cemetery in Newark Valley, New York, at a time to be announced.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Howard; sister, Patricia Robinson; brother, Robert (Vickie) Givens; daughters, Debra (Dr. David) Strope and Dianna Collingwood; grandchildren, Katherine (Hosea) Rodriguez, Elisabeth (Brian) Jeffords, Rebekah (Kimberley) Strope-Boggus, David Andrew (Jessica) Strope, and Benjamin Collingwood; great-grandchildren, Marina Phillips, Ava Rodriguez, Victoria, Alexander, Emmeline, and Eleanor Jeffords, Journey, Jacob, Weston, and Olive Strope-Boggus, and Rowyn, Ryker, and Reagan Strope; and great-great-grandson, Ezekiel Phillips.

Her delight was to be Nana to her 19 grands. A longtime resident of Newark Valley and Vestal, New York, Shirley lived the last five years as an Iowa transplant, receiving the care of her Ankeny family. She received Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young child and today knows the joy of eternal life through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Special thanks are shared with Wesley Life Hospice. Memorial gifts may be given to Ankeny Baptist Church, 2842 SW Third Street or Regular Baptist Ministries, PO Box 7321, Carol Stream IL, 60197-7321.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
