Shirley May Parrish, 77, of Ankeny was greeted by the Lord Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday June 27, 2015 at Ankeny United Church of Christ (602 S.E. Delaware Ave.) with burial to follow at Oralabor Cemetery where she will join her late husband Bill, who passed away 20 days earlier.
A visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Friday June 26, 2015 at Ankeny Memorial Chapel (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.)
Shirley was born May 1, 1938 in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Richard and Marge Swartfager. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 1956. She then attended Broadlawns School of Nursing, receiving her LPN nursing license.
She married Bill Parrish June 5, 1959. Most of her working career was spent as a dispatcher for the Ankeny Police Department. She ultimately became the supervisor of communications and the department statistician.
Shirley was a very creative person, an established seamstress, loved to crochet, and loved everything dolls; from collecting to repairing to even creating her own porcelain dolls. She was a member of the Kate Shelly Doll Club and the Sunshine Doll Club. She enjoyed her time at the lake in Minnesota and loved to fish and water ski.
She is survived by her 3 children, Paula (Brad) Cherry of Benson, AZ, Ron (Angie)Parrish of Sedalia, MO, Deb (Jerry) Fischer of Bondurant; grandchildren, Scott and Lindsay Lincoln, Austin Parrish, Matt and Emily Righi, and Megan Fischer; 2 great-grandchildren, Braiden and Addison Mishler; her mother, Marge Swartfager; half-sister Susan Bailey and half-brother John Ogilvie; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her father, Richard Swartfager, and an infant brother Tommy.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Taylor House Hospice or Ankeny United Church of Christ.
