Susan Nelson, 73, of Ankeny passed away November 6, 2017.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 9th at Ankeny Presbyterian Church (317 S.E. Trilein Dr). A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8th at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd).
Susan was born Nov. 10, 1943 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Ed and Ruby Smith. She graduated from Walnut High School and went on to earn an education degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
She started her teaching career in Eagle Grove in 1965, where she met Ken Nelson. The two were married June 1, 1968. The couple moved to Ankeny in 1970, where they raised a family. She taught for the Ankeny School system for 29 years until her retirement in 1999.
She served on the School board for 2 terms; was involved with the Ankeny Education Association; she started an after school program to tutor E.S.L. students; and was an Elder of her Church, where she served on many committees.
Sue enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states; most of Canada and Europe. She enjoyed bible study, Missions trips, fishing, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ken; children, Jennifer (Dick) Miller, Eric (Julie) Nelson; 3 grandchildren, Jacob, Brody, and Haley Miller; a brother Roger (Carmen) Smith; niece, Robin (Scott) Susich, and nephew, Tony Smith.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Ankeny Presbyterian Church.
