Tawnya Julene Rickard, 47, of Des Moines, peacefully passed away with her daughters and family by her side on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, into the loving arms of Jesus Christ.
A visitation will be held in her honor at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) on Thursday, January 11, at 4:00 PM with a funeral service following at 5:00 PM.
Tawnya was born on February 2, 1976, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Rebecca Adams and Danny Rickard. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa as a young child and continued to go on and raise her children there as well. She attended Abraham Lincoln High School and later attended Kaplan University where she received her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She focused her work life on social work but had several other occupations, including owning her own boutique and baking cupcakes and sweets.
Tawnya was a loving and compassionate woman who cared very deeply for her family, friends, people closest to her, and pets, who she referred to as her fur babies. Her biggest accomplishment in life was being a mother. Her daughters were her world and for many years she spent her time being a stay-at-home mom, working hard as a girl scout leader, running PTA meetings for school, organizing talent shows, planning birthday parties, and many more things.
She also had a love for music and singing karaoke, which she got from her mother, some of her favorite bands being Motley Crue and Guns n Roses. Tawnya had a strong personality and a heart of gold, no matter what she was going through in her own life she was always the most supportive and positive that she could be to help others with their problems, and never failed to find a way to make others and herself laugh.
Tawnya is survived by her daughters, Carissa and Vanessa Rowland; father, Danny Rickard; partner, Chris Porter; brother, James Hamilton (Dillan); sister, Valerie Kittleson (Matt); and pets, Sophie and Savannah.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Rebecca Adams; grandparents, Barbara and Leo Nichols; and pets Angel, Casey, and Rocky.
