Terry Doling, 58, of Ankeny, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2016.
Terry was born in Iowa City to Thomas and Eleanor Doling, where he met the love of his life, Barbara Doling. They became high-school sweethearts and got married on August 25, 1979.

Terry graduated from the University of Iowa in 1981 and went on to work 25 years for Payless Cashways. He spent the past 14 years as a Showroom Manager at Showplace Kitchens. He also held several leadership positions as an active member of Home Builders Association and a builder he was…

Forty years together, Terry and Barb built a loving home with three beautiful children: Mike, Kelli and Alissa. Terry lived his life as a walking role model for how to be the best husband, father, brother and Papa. He enjoyed camping, biking and spending quality time with family. He was proud of his family. Terry taught us all about the importance of working hard, honestly and earnestly. He was supportive, generous, humble, kind, goofy, protective and loving. He was quick to challenge anyone to a game of “name the artist and title” on the radio because he was a trivia master. And all who knew Terry, know he was a die-hard Hawkeye Fan. The sound of Hawkeye sports constantly filled the house, accompanied with loud yelling or celebrated cheers. He knew every stat, every player, coach, and every game related to the team.

If there was only one thing that gave Terry more joy than Hawkeye sports, it was being a “silly” Papa to his beautiful granddaughter, Olivia. His face lit up every time he talked to or about his “Livy Bivy.” It is a blessing that he spent his last week on Earth entertaining her with Barb.

It’s not a coincidence that his enlarged heart took his life. He had a big heart. He went out of his way to ensure the people around him felt loved, comfortable and welcomed. He was a genuine provider; a guardian angel in a 6 foot 3-inch body. He was light-hearted and it is with heavy hearts that we let him go.
We know he is in heaven, reunited with his parents, watching over us now. Our lives will never be the same, but we are blessed to have spent a special part of it with Terry Doling.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Doling, son Mike Doling, daughter Kelli (Andy) Katzman, granddaughter Olivia Katzman, daughter Alissa Doling, sisters Patricia Doling, and Susan (Larry) Seaton.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Gale and Lena Gritton, his paternal grandparents Thomas and Grace Doling, and his parents Thomas and Eleanor Doling.

Visitation will be held 5pm-8pm on Monday March 28, 2016, at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday March 29, 2016, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association.
