Thomas Hart, of Ankeny, Iowa, lost his battle with cancer at home on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the age of 67.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., with a visitation at 9:30 a.m., on Friday, February 16 at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart, 510 E First St., Ankeny, IA.
Tom was born to Truman and Mary Ellen Hart on January 17, 1951 in Sterling, Illinois. He was the oldest of Truman’s six children. He attended Sterling High School and the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor’s in finance in 1973.
He married his college sweetheart Janet on August 25, 1973. They had two children, Bryan and Kimberly.
After college, Tom became a CPA in Des Moines and worked at Coopers and Lybrand, a public accounting firm. He moved to Sheldon, Iowa and continued working in public accounting. He was then recruited to United Suppliers, an agrichemical distributor in Eldora, Iowa, where he worked for the next three decades. Tom managed sales and distribution across the Midwest, greatly expanding sales, revenue, and geographic reach. United Suppliers became one of the largest distributors in the nation. After retiring and growing restless, he jumped back into the industry at Meridian Agriculture Distribution.
The family moved to Ankeny in 1996. Tom enjoyed attending Hawkeye football and basketball games, holding season football tickets for nearly fifty years; teasing with his friends on the golf course; and cooking elaborate meals for friends and family. He was ready to retire again and spend more time with Jan, snowbirding in Florida. What he was most proud of were his children.
His survivors include his wife, Janet Hart; his son, Bryan (Erin Cikanek) Hart; his daughter, Kimberly (Heesung) Yoon; his grandchildren, Leah and Henry Yoon; his sisters Barbara Taylor, Pam (Marvin) Budde, Sally Mueller; his brother Jeffrey Hart; and his half-sister Cari (Chris) Backes.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Food Bank of Iowa.
