Victor Arnold Machir, 73, passed on May 7th, 2016 peacefully with his family by his side. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14th with services following at 11 a.m. at Memorial Services of Iowa.
Vic was born on May 27th, 1942 to Diela (Henderson) and Morton Machir. He adored his step-father, George Hartman. He was raised on the east side of Des Moines, Iowa and resided in the area for most of his life. Vic was proud of his east side roots.
In 1959 Victor married Linda Hartman (Wright) and together they began their family, which was Vic’s greatest treasure. Although the union did not last, the friendship remained.
Vic began painting with Ruppe Brothers in 1959, at which time he joined the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades union. Vic was superintendent of Color, Inc before opening his own paint shop, Superior Interiors in 1984. He touched many lives and was well respected in the 20 years he owned and operated Superior Interiors. Vic worked for many other paint shops through the years. In May of 2009 he very proudly received his 50 year pin from IBPAT and was honored for his 50 years of service; soon after, he retired.
Vic left a bit of himself in his craft all over his beloved city of Des Moines. He was especially proud of his leadership in the painting of the newly constructed Ruan Center and Financial Center. Vic treated his “job” as a vocation and craft. He truly mastered his trade and passed along his knowledge to many whom he mentored. His brothers in trade were his family and Vic treated them as such.
Vic loved fishing, hunting, and camping. He enjoyed sketching, painting and photographing wildlife. He loved to read and dining out with friends and family. He took up running, participating in several 5ks and biking, going on several RAGBRAI tours. For many years, Vic coached his daughters’ softball teams. He loved watching his grandkids in whatever extracurricular activities they were participating in; whether soccer, softball, dance recitals, a four-hour band concert or his grandson shredding to heavy metal music at the House of Bricks he proudly encouraged from the sidelines. Everywhere he went, he delighted in introducing his children and grandchildren with not only their name but always adding positive qualities each time.
Vic is survived by his children, Vicky Pinegar (Tim), John Machir (Patti), Diana Machir and Kay Kelleher (Lou.) Along with his children, Vic is survived by his treasured nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, his brother, Ronald (Ona) Machir and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Vic is preceded in death by his mother, Diela Hartman; his father, Morton Machir; his step-father, George “Slim” Hartman; his brother Mort (Arvella) Machir; his sister, Jackie (Bob) Beck; his sons-in-law, Jon Richeson and Tim Pinegar; and his grandchild, Timothy J. Pinegar.
