Walter Leslie Peterman was born January 22, 1930, in Tulare, South Dakota, to Harlan and Eva Peterman and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends in Ankeny, IA on June 20, 2023.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.) with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

Walter was one of nine children and he worked as a farmhand from 1944-1951. On September 21, 1951, he was drafted into the US Army and was discharged in June of 1953 after serving in Korea from March 1952 to June 1953.

Walter and Norma were married on June 30, 1954, in Pierre, South Dakota. They moved to Ankeny, IA in 1968 where they raised their five children. Walter worked as a diesel mechanic for American Freight until retirement.  After retirement, Walter formed his own business doing construction work. He was always there for every event that his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids had. He was ever present in his family’s life and did his best to show his love through service and time.

Walter always had a strong work ethic and worked hard to service others, attempt to catch fish, and attempt to fix things with whatever gorilla glue he could find. Walter was ornery, stubborn, and always had a mischievous grin on his face. He was always there when you needed help to finish a project, especially in a supervisory status. In his later years, you could find him at Good Times playing pool or cards and having a Pepsi with some of his favorite people. In his free time, he enjoyed, hunting, fishing, playing cards, shooting pool, stealing money from Prairie Meadows and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his five children, Kathy (Doug) Rose, Lonnie (Bev) Peterman, Linnette (Bert) Green, Keith (Diane) Peterman, and Greg (Connie) Peterman; his seven grandchildren, Christen, Sarah, Nicole, Tanner, James, Matt and Josh; his two brothers, Robert and Darryl; his sister, Mildred; and his many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Norma Peterman; his mother and father, Harlan and Eva Peterman; his son, Douglas Walter Peterman; his great-grandson, Liam John Knapp; and his numerous siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Walter Peterman.
