Wanda Smith, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, surrounded by family.

She loved life, loved God, loved to be with people and knew no strangers. She was always willing to give a little advice to anyone she met. Wanda was loved by her family and many friends…she will be deeply missed.

A visitation will be held Sunday, January 7, 2024, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny) with a prayer service beginning at 3:30 PM. A funeral mass will be held Monday, January 8, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st St., Ankeny) with a light lunch to follow. Rite of Committal (burial) will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery (1 NE 60th Ave., Des Moines) at 1:00 PM following the luncheon. Mass will be live streamed at https://www.olih.org/funeral-announcements.

Wanda was born to Harold and Elizabeth Waters on September 30, 1937.  Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, David; her son, Tim; and her parents.  Wanda is survived by her children, Susan Hannam (Ray), Phil (Cindy), and Matt (Jane); grandkids, Nathan Hannam (Susan), Lindsey Hurst (Jake), Samantha Smith, Anthony Smith (Sierra), Kate Smith (Andrew/fiancé), Abby Smith (Dillan/fiancé); and five great grandkids.

Wanda grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating from Abraham Lincoln in 1955 where she met her husband, Dave.  She worked for the gas company and Shavers Grocery Store in Council Bluffs. Dave and Wanda raised four children, moving to Atlantic, Iowa for a short time and eventually moved to Ankeny, Iowa in 1975.

Wanda always enjoyed “social” work where she could interact with the public, in particular French Way and Dapper Dan’s dry cleaners. Wanda enjoyed attending various sporting events with her friends and family many times watching children and grandchildren perform.  After the passing of her husband Dave, she enjoyed spending time with some special friends, most recently Frank Mann of Council Bluffs.  She loved to travel taking trips to New York City, Boston, Arizona, and Italy (to name a few) with her sister-in-law Patti.  Wanda spoke dearly and had so many great memories with her close friends in Ankeny.  She was a member of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church where she enjoyed attending mass when she could.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the OLIH Catholic Church.  A special thanks goes out to the Mill Pond staff for all the love and support they showed her this past year.
