J Edward Johnston

J Edward Johnston, 88 years, went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Trinity Center at Luther Park, Des Moines Iowa. Ed was born to Delbert Henry and Delia Susan Johnston on July 8, 1929 in Lisbon, Iowa. He grew up in the Lisbon and Cedar Rapids area during his younger years. The family moved to Blairstown in his high school years, where he met with wife Joan Lee Neuzil. They were married September 27, 1948. In the next eight years they had six children: Doug – June, 1949, Connie – June, 1950, Randy – May, 1952, Laura – September, 1953, Paul – September, 1955, and Nancy – November 1957.
Ed, a self-made man, was successful in life as well as a loving husband (of almost 70 years), father, grandfather and friend. He had a contagious smile and never met a stranger. Ed touched many lives and will be missed by all.
After 35 years of service, Ed retired from Colonial Baking Company in July 1992. He was a CyRide bus driver for the City of Ames for ten years. Hobbies included bowling, fishing, golfing and traveling visiting family throughout the States.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kenneth Duncan of Manchester, IA and his son, Randall Alan. He is survived by his wife, Joan Lee; 5 children, Douglas William, OH, Constance Rae Johnston Arthur (Neil), AK, Laura Ann Johnston Stevens (Ron), CO, Paul Edward (Cindy), IA, and Nancy Jo Johnston Wadle (Fred), IA; 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, IA, or Des Moines Animal Rescue League.
