LaMont Raymond Schreurs passed away peacefully in the company of his loved ones at The Bridges in Ankeny on Sunday morning, Christmas day. He got his wish to be home for Christmas and to have this Christmas be “the best Christmas ever”.

LaMont was born on May 11, 1946 to Raymond and Muriel Schreurs in Rock Rapids, Iowa, a small farming community in Northwest Iowa. His first home was on a small farm in Larchwood, Iowa and later the family moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa where they remained until 1968 before moving to Ankeny. He was an outstanding athlete in Central Lyon High School, lettering in all sports and being named to several All State Teams. After high school he attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska for a few years before answering the call to military service in the United States Air Force. He served four years as a radar technician in Falmouth, Mass., Syracuse, New York, Okino, Japan during the Viet Nam conflict, and Fallon, Nevada. Upon his discharge he returned to the Schreurs family’s new home in Ankeny. On June 10, 1972, he married Norma Christensen and they were blessed with son Matthew, his pride and joy. LaMont soon found himself building houses with his brother, Lee for Everett Lewis Construction. A few years later, he and Lee started their own home building business, Schreurs Construction. For a time, Lamont worked for Home Valu as their lead installer and remodeler. After Home Valu’s dispersal, he continued to use his skills for building and remodelling in the Des Moines and Ankeny communities.

LaMont was very active in support of his son, Matt’s high school band and golf endeavours. He was also proud to have been one of the “founding fathers” of the Otter Creek men’s golf league and remained one of the regulars in weekly play. LaMont and Lee were also founding fathers of the Ankeny Builders Association. He especially enjoyed his work for the group’s social events that included summer picnics, Valentine dances, and most importantly, the community children’s Christmas event held annually at the fire station. He was particularly proud of the many families for which they were able to provide Christmas trees, and gifts for those who would not have had Christmas without the ABA contributions. In over 25 years they impacted the lives of over 3000 people with Christmases that might not have been.

LaMont had many “silent talents” including his dry wit and great sense of humor. Unknown to most, however, was his wood carving talent. For years, he carved Santa’s for family members and special friends, each year a new model with a different theme. His working horse carvings were also his passion. He loved to recreate teams of horses doing their work pulling sleighs, wagons and farm tools.

Above all, LaMont loved his family and friends. He loved his extended family and included many friends into his family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Preceding him in death were his parents, Raymond and Muriel Schreurs. He is survived by his son Matthew (Jessica), and two grandsons, Gavin and Brady and his significant other, Pam Davidson. He is also survived by his siblings, Lynn (Chris) Schreurs, Cindy (Terry) Hamilton, Lee (Mary) Schreurs, 6 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the wonderful staff at The Bridges in Ankeny and the staff of Suncrest Hospice for their wonderfully dedicated care.

A visitation will be held at 5 PM Wednesday, December 28 at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church on 1st Street in Ankeny and a Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, December 29 at 10:30 AM, also at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. A private family interment service will be held at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery in Maxwell, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holy Cross Cemetery, The Bridges in Ankeny, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church.
