Neil Henry Sutherland, 80, of Ankeny, IA passed away June 19, 2022. He was born January 29, 1942 to Harry and Wilma (Chitty) Sutherland in Story County.

Neil lived in Story County for the majority of his life. He worked 43 years at the Department of Transportation and other various part time jobs in automotive, retiring July 2004.

He married Marcia (Posusta) Sutherland on November 29, 1980 in Marshalltown, IA. They raised two daughters in Ames, IA, Dawn and Abby. He also had two children from a previous marriage, Jeff and Lisa.

Neil’s real passion was automobiles, owning way more than most people. After retirement, it wasn’t long before health became an issue for him. He then moved to Ankeny, IA to be closer to grandkids and daughters.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; daughters, Dawn (Matt) Powers of Davenport, IA, Abby (Nic) Burger of Urbandale, IA, and Lisa (Rick) Portel of Johnston, IA; son, Jeff Sutherland of Texas; grandchildren, Sean, Margaret, and Amelia Powers of Davenport, IA, Austin Burger of Urbandale, IA, Cydney, Dylan, and Mya Sutherland of Texas, and Mike and Jessica Portel of Johnston, IA; brothers, Craig (Julie) Sutherland of Nevada, IA, and Chuck (Susie) Sutherland of Des Moines, IA; sister, Sandi (Kent) Ryan of Ames, IA; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Ogren and Paulette (Harry) Hala; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Gary and Wendell; sister-in-law, Bonnie; brother-in-law, Don Ogren; and his parents-in-law, Ernie and Helen Posusta.

A memorial service will be held for immediate family.
