Roger E. Steinkamp, 89, of Ankeny passed away September 21, 2017, with his family by his side.
A Funeral will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 25th at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). A visitation will be held 4 – 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24th, also at the funeral home.
Roger was born July 10th 1928 in Carroll, Iowa to John and Susan Steinkamp. Roger grew up on a farm near Breda, Iowa. As a young adult, Roger served in the Army during the Korean War.
On April 29th 1953, he married Margery Onken in Carroll, Iowa.
Roger spent his adult life working on large construction projects throughout many states. In 1968 the family settled in Ankeny, Iowa where they have lived ever since.
Roger was fortunate that all of his five children lived so close.
In his retirement years, he never missed a sporting event, recital, or recognition of any of his grandchildren, including a trip to San Diego to see his grandson graduate from the Marine Academy. His grandchildren were his ultimate joy. There wasn’t a single day that went by that he didn’t say he had the best family.
Marge was with the love of his life.
Roger’s survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marge; five children, Loren Steinkamp, Sharon (Steve) Schinkel, Luann (Lenny) Leo, Warren (Lisa) Steinkamp, Yvonne (Rob) Silvers; 9 grandchildren, Lee (Kaylynn) Steinkamp, Cole (Sonja) Schinkel, Danielle (Andrew) Brommer, Dustin (Katie) Leo, Tyler Leo, Joceylyn (Jared) Pedersen, Ryan (Alexandra) Steinkamp, Ben (Morgan) Silvers, and Peyton Silvers; nine great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Luka, Luther, Maddox, Owen, Iris, Mila, Ava and Edie.
We would like to say a special thank you to Sunnyview Care Center and Suncrest Hospice. Their staff was amazing and we were so fortunate to have their excellent treatment and care to Roger and our family.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Derek Steinkamp and brothers and sisters.
